An Open Letter to Chad Johnson From Gary McDaniel
By: Gary McDaniel
Dear Chad,
It’s time to remove the “20??” overcoat – you’re never going to be in the Hall of Fame. The NFL reserves that hallowed site for standouts like Jerry Rice and Marvin Harrison – not just standouts on the field, but quality human beings.
Chad, if you would, crack open the dictionary and turn to “s”. “Selfish”: concerned excessively or exclusively with oneself : seeking or concentrating on one’s own advantage, pleasure, or well-being without regard for others.
Does that ring a bell? I understand that you don’t care about the fans, and I’m not asking for an apology. Your only care is taking care of Chad. I get the point.
However, you’re missing the big picture. Catching footballs on a field means nothing without 66,000 fans watching from the stands. You can’t take care of Chad without taking care of the fans. For better or worse, your life directly correlates with those willing to pay to see you play (myself included). Selfish doesn’t work in football.
It’ll be interesting to see where your selfish persona will lead you. Out of all of the owners and coaches out there, the group in Cincinnati is the one most likely to stubbornly stick to their guns. Your rant will not dissolve your contract. Mike and Marvin will likely choose to let you sit out the season before trading you. Your only hope is that there is a team out there desperate enough to give more than they’re going to receive. At this point, are you worth a first round pick or a top-tiered linebacker? If not, have fun in South Beach this fall.
I hope you’ve saved enough for retirement because a year or two out of this league will turn you into a nobody. If this organization sticks to their guns, Mike Vick will be on the field before you.
Chad, I don’t wish that for you. I hope you get traded. I hope we have two first round draft picks this year. You’re not wanted; you’re not welcome. And the next time you criticize a guy like Carson Palmer, realize that it takes more than just numbers to get to the Hall. It takes respect – you’ve earned zero.
Your once loyal fan,
Gary McDaniel
